Discussion needed to review scaling down Islands B and C of the PSI project, says CM Chow

FURTHER discussion will be held to consider the possibility of scaling down the reclamation of Islands B and C of the Penang South Islands (PSI) project, says Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

Chow was responding to a question asked by a reporter when he attended the Gift of Love Charity Food Fair organised by the Service Civil International (SCI) Penang Chapter at the Special Children’s Centre Penang in Jalan Grove today.

He explained that, initially, the financing model for the implementation of the Komtar– Bayan Lepas LRT project partially comes from the PSI reclamation project.

“We understand that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook had asked the state government to consider scaling down the PSI reclamation project.

“The PSI project consists of three islands which are A (Silicon Island), B, and C and had received the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) approval for the project.

“Since the Federal Government has announced funding the Komtar-Bayan Lepas LRT project, we will look at whether we can scale down the implementation concerning the Islands B and C of the PSI project, which is subject to further discussion,” Chow said.

Yesterday during the Malaysia Madani Aidilfitri open house at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) in Permatang Pauh, Anwar announced that the Federal Government would be providing financial assistance for Penang’s LRT project.

Chow shared that the state government would be holding a discussion with SRS Consortium Sdn Bhd about the scaling down of the Islands B and C of the PSI project.

“We need time to decide on the matter as the announcement was just made yesterday,” he added.
