Dredging works brought forward to address fishermen’s navigation challenges in Permatang Tepi Laut

ADDRESSING fishermen’s navigation challenges has become a priority for Silicon Island Development Sdn Bhd (SIDSB), as dredging works in Permatang Tepi Laut have commenced ahead of the original schedule.

This proactive move forms part of the Penang state government’s commitment to resolving the long-standing siltation issues affecting the local fishing community.

Dredging of the navigation channel, which has been ongoing for the past month, was initiated earlier than the original timeline – planned initially to begin only after the completion of the Silicon Island reclamation.

The effort is further reinforced by ongoing temporary trenching works in Permatang Tengah to ensure a smoother and safer passage for fishermen’s boats.

SIDSB strategic communications and stakeholder management director Azmi Mohamad said the decision to expedite dredging works reflects the state government’s commitment to safeguarding the interests of the local community.

“While the siltation issue is a long-standing challenge, we remain committed to providing a more efficient and safer navigation route for fishermen,” he said.

He noted, however, that due to the large size of the cutter suction dredger in use, operations must be carried out according to tidal schedules to ensure safety and smooth execution.

Azmi added that the contractor is also working closely with the Persatuan Komuniti Permatang Damar Laut to carry out daily manual beach-cleaning works.

“At the same time, the Pusat Perkhidmatan Setempat Nelayan (PPSN) team conducts site monitoring twice daily, during both high and low tides, to ensure conditions remain under control,” he said during a Hari Raya Aidilfitri food basket contribution programme held recently at the Permatang Tepi Laut Fishermen’s Unit Hall.

At the event, 89 fishermen from the Permatang Tepi Laut Fishermen’s Unit received food baskets to ease preparations for the festive season.

Azmi added that fishermen’s welfare remains central under the Social Impact Management Plan (SIMP).

“To date, a total of 148 fishermen have received new boats and engines at an estimated cost of RM13.32 million, while RM11.8 million in ex-gratia payments has been distributed to 795 fishermen,” he said.

Meanwhile, Bayan Lepas assemblyman and Penang State Legislative Assembly deputy speaker Datuk Azrul Mahathir Aziz expressed appreciation to SIDSB for its continued efforts in supporting the fishing community, particularly in addressing technical challenges.

“Fishermen in Permatang Tepi Laut are among the earliest beneficiaries under the SIMP programme, including boats, engines and ex-gratia payments.

“These initiatives go beyond physical assistance, as they also include educational support for fishermen’s children through free tuition, as well as employment opportunities,” he said.

Permatang Tepi Laut fishermen’s unit chief Khairi Saaroni described the festive contributions as a clear demonstration of concern for the community’s livelihood.

“Global conflicts have had some impact on the national economy, and imported fish prices may increase.

“As such, local fishermen must play an important role in ensuring sufficient domestic seafood supply to help maintain economic stability at both state and national levels,” he said.

Also present at the programme was Penang Island City Council councillor Mohd Aidil Fitri Ibrahim, who presented a RM2,000 cheque contribution on behalf of the Bayan Baru parliamentary office.
