THE Penang government has always given priority to the education sector in the state, says state Housing, Local Government, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo.

He said that education, which is the key to the future of our nation, would not be neglected by the state government even during the Covid-19 situation.

“We have been assisting a total of 217 primary schools and 125 secondary schools throughout Penang all these years.

“From 2009 to 2021, the state government has allocated a total of RM126,348,000 to assist as well to upgrade various school facilities to ensure quality education is delivered to our students.

“Since 2008, my constituency has spent a total of RM400,000 on buying school uniforms and has provided other assistance as well to various schools.

“This does not include the allocation for upgrading works at schools,’’ Jagdeep said during the school uniform, bags and shoes voucher giveaway ceremony at Tiffin’s Chettiar in George Town on Nov 20.

Jagdeep, who is also Datok Keramat assemblyman, contributed a total of RM7,600 worth of school uniforms, bags, shoes vouchers to children from Ashrama Ramakrishna, Wisma Anak Yatim, as well as from the lower income families.

During the event, business entrepreneur Datuk Rethinam Pillay treated the recipients to a scrumptious luncheon. He also presented some back-to-school programme vouchers to several deserving kids.
