ALTHOUGH the Penang Bridge International Marathon (PBIM) 2025 is scheduled for December 14, preparations are already well underway, and excitement is building for what is expected to be one of the most vibrant editions yet.

Speaking to Buletin Mutiara, state Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said that this year’s PBIM aims to set a new benchmark in terms of participation and overall experience.

“One of the major additions this year is the ‘Road to PBIM 2025 series.

“It is a line-up of warm-up runs throughout the year to help participants build stamina and mental readiness. It also builds excitement leading up to the main event,” Wong said when contacted for comments today.

Held once again on the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Bridge, the marathon will offer runners a unique and iconic race route from the island to Batu Kawan on the mainland.

Wong emphasised that the 2025 edition will focus on enhancing the overall participant experience.

Improvements include a better-organised race route to reduce congestion, expanded rest zones, upgraded facilities, and the introduction of a new ‘runners’ pen’ at the starting line to streamline the pacing categories.

“The goal is to create a smoother and more enjoyable race for everyone,” he said.

PBIM 2025 is being supported by strategic partners such as Aspen, Klippa, and IKEA Batu Kawan.

Wong also announced new sponsorship collaborations, including brands like Tesla, Counterpain, Seiko, and Brooks, noting that more names are expected to be confirmed in the coming months.

Online registration is already open, with early response showing strong interest. Organisers anticipate even higher participation than the 22,000 runners from 64 countries who joined last year.

“About 9% of the runners are international participants, while 25% come from outside Penang, which will have a significant positive impact on the local tourism and hospitality sectors, especially in Seberang Perai,” Wong noted.

PBIM 2025 will also feature entertainment and side activities, including interactive game booths, exclusive merchandise stalls, and live stage performances. Lucky draw prizes include a car, flight tickets, premium running shoes, sports gear, and electronic accessories.

To support logistics, over 30 Rapid Penang buses will transport runners from the island to Batu Kawan, reflecting improved coordination and professional-level event planning.

“Preparations involve coordination across various government agencies and the private sector.

“There is an increased capacity for public transport, better traffic planning, and strong promotion to hotels, homestays, and F&B businesses,” Wong added.

Last year, more than 34% of runners were from outside Penang and overseas, a figure that underscores the event’s value in boosting both domestic and international tourism.
