Exco man to help more than century-old Chinese temple to be gazetted as heritage building

THE 135-year-old Caunter Hall Tua Peh Kong Temple in Jalan Terengganu will be proposed to be gazetted as a heritage building.

 

State Local Government, Housing, Town and Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said the over century-old temple is eligible to be gazzetted as a heritage building.

 

“We will try our best to help the temple to be conferred the heritage status.

 

“We have been discussing the matter for some time, therefore I would like wish all the best to the temple in getting the due recognition,” Jagdeep said at the temple’s 135th anniversary celebration today.

 

Meanwhile, it is learned earlier that the Caunter Hall Tua Peh Kong Temple has pledged to donate a total of RM8,000 to eight non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

 

However, Jagdeep said he would be making the contribution instead.

 

The organisations include Penang Cheshire Home, The Penang Home for the Infirm and Aged, Children’s Protection Society Penang, Persatuan Syukur Penyayang Pulau Pinang, Persatuan Kebajikan Anak-Anak OKU Taman Island Penang, Persatuan Bomba Sukarela Perak Lane Pulau Pinang, Penang Fo Yi Haemodialysis Society and Pertubuhan Penyayang Hospis Pure Lotus Pulau Pinang.

Jagdeep also commended the Caunter Hall Tua Peh Kong Temple for their active participation in various charitable works.

 

Apart from that, Jagdeep also reaffirmed that the state government would continue to help both the Islamic and non-islamic houses of worship in Penang.

 

“To date, the RIBI (non-Islamic houses of worship) fund has disbursed a total of RM8.691 million.

 

“Let it be Islamic and non-islamic houses of worship, the state government will stay committed to meeting the needs of these houses of worship,” he added.

 

Also present with Jagdeep during the visit was Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Daniel Gooi.
