FRIENDLY Penang-Japan relations have been shown through collaborations in the past, and the Consulate-General of Japan is committed to ensuring the ties stay intact in the future, Consul-General of Japan in Penang Hiroyuki Orikasa said.

He said about 2,800 Japanese residents and more than 120 Japanese companies in Penang have deepened Japan’s friendship with the people of Penang.

“Through all possible channels, we have managed to strengthen the relationship with Penang based on our mutual respect, understanding and trust.

“We will continue to strengthen our ties as Penang has been the home for many Japanese residents, and we hope for better and fruitful outcomes in the future.

“The relations, in the past and up until now, have been exhibited through events such as the Penang Bon Odori festival, Penang Yosakoi dance parade and many others.

“Besides the long history of exchanges with Kanagawa-prefecture, Katsushika and Itabashi cities in Tokyo, Penang has fostered a friendly environment between the people of Japan and Penang.

“Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Penang government and its people not only for their continuous friendship but also for supporting the Japanese residents and communities,” Orikasa said during a low-key celebration to commemorate the Emperor of Japan’s 62nd birthday at Cititel Penang in George Town today.

Emperor Hironomiya Naruhito turns 62 on Feb 23.

Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Ahmad Zakiyuddin Abdul Rahman, on behalf of the state, expressed his gratitude to all the Japanese people living in Penang, particularly those that have contributed immensely to the growth of the state.

Also present was Japanese Ambassador to Malaysia Katsuhiko Takahashi.
