‘Folklore by the Sea’ unfolds the history of the Clan Jetties

The Clan Jetties which are part of the UNESCO heritage sites are among the many attractions in Penang that are much treasured by locals and foreigners as they hold so much of untold stories which when ‘explored’, will impact visitors with a dosage of nostalgia.

Now to unfold the history behind the clan jetties here comes the ‘Folklore by the Sea’, a live theatrical show set in the heart of Chew Jetty with the aim of preserving and promoting their heritage, arts and cultural values.

“The overall concept and idea was inspired by our late mother Mdm Tan Beng Choo who wanted the history to be heard and passed on to the next generation,” said Chew Siew Pheng, the owner of the mini-theater set (using part of her house) located at Lot 59A during the preview of the show on Nov 30.

“Thus we have come up with the idea of using the means of live show (drama) and storytelling to reach out to the public on the historic significance of the Clan Jetties.

“We encourage the public to come and watch the show put up by us, and they can either pre-book their seats or walk in to enjoy the performance.”

Also present during the ‘Folklore by the Sea’ preview was Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Daniel Gooi, who stressed on the importance of knowing one’s identity, especially the young people, as well as preserving it.

“Who would have thought that a unit in the clan jetty can be turned into a setting such as this to showcase the heritage and cultural uniqueness?

“George Town is a city full of stories and this initiative taken by Ms Chew will be a good platform to tell the whole world on the history of this beautiful city. Hope this could be part of the small events in conjunction with the George Town Festival in coming years,” Gooi said.
