For a zero-waste lifestyle

WHEN mentioning recycling and greenery effort, Penang would surely be at the forefront.

This is due to the fact that the state government has been actively promoting such initiative all this while.

What’s more, the state’s 2030 vision is to move towards ‘A Family-focused Green and Smart State that Inspires the Nation’ as outlined by Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

Supporting one such initiative is a zero-waste store located at No. 29, Nagore Road in George Town.

Known as Nak.Ed Farm, it is accessible via a staircase beside a convenience store that faces a famous bakery.

When it started in 2015, it focused on selling homemade soaps. Gradually, Nak.Ed Farm grew into a small business selling various other items.

Buletin Mutiara managed to catch up with its owner Wong Pei Chin for an interview at her store recently.

Wong, who is passionate about advocating greenery and recycling efforts, hopes that more educational knowledge could be spread among the public through the establishment of her store.

“Every product here has its own uniqueness and vibes. We focus on using natural and fresh ingredients in our products. All these handcrafted items are homemade for environmental purposes.

“For instance, handmade soaps are popular with many customers who would place orders after being attracted to them.

“Besides that, the shop also promotes natural skin care products, such as hand cream and moisturiser. We also sell essential oil, coconut oil, chilli oil honey, fermented bean curd and other dry foods,” she said.

In order to promote recycling, the store’s equipment is made from recycled materials.

Wong showed Buletin Mutiara that some of the furniture and display cabinets were made from such materials.

“We emphasise the importance of using recyclable bottles, cans or envelopes as one of the ways to pack the handmade soap.

“We can save resources and avoid any wastage through this concept,” said Wong, adding that one of her wishes is to open a new cafe with an environmental-friendly theme.

Those who visit Nak.Ed Farm can also spend their leisure time at a mini-book exhibition that will be held until April 30.

This would be the time for those book lovers to take advantage of this session.

The store is open from Monday to Saturday, which is from 11am till 6pm. It is closed on Sunday.
