THE Penang government expressed its hope that the economic ties with China will be restored once the Covid-19 pandemic situation improves.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the close economic cooperation between the state and Chinese cities would resume and be restored to pre Covid-19 levels for the continuous growth of Chinese culture.

“For the start of the new year, let us pray for world peace, the wellbeing and progress of the people while all ethnicities live in unity for a better tomorrow.

Chow during his online address at the Kwong Wah Jit Poh office in Presgrave Street.

“Let us toast for a long-lasting friendship between the Penang government and Chinese Consulate-General in the state as well as enhance ties between Malaysia and China,” he said during the Chinese New Year online reception at Kwong Wah Yit Poh office in Presgrave Street.

The event was organised by the Chinese Consulate-General in Penang.

Chow noted the scale-downed Chinese New Year celebration this year in a new normal atmosphere.

“Perhaps some of you might not be able to have a proper reunion with your loved ones but let’s be patient and spend the festive season at where you are for the sake of a better future.

“Through our joint efforts, let’s work towards achieving single digit or even better, zero infection case in the state.

“The country needs a high degree of cooperation from the people in order to break the chain of infection,” he said.

Chow was happy that the online platform was used for this event.

“Through this, members of the diplomatic corps can have a virtual reunion for the Lunar New Year,” he said.

Others taking part in the virtual event include state executive councillors and various stakeholders.

Malaysia and China have enjoyed a close and time-tested friendship and diplomatic ties since 1974, especially in trade, cultural exchange, education and tourism.

Lu hopes the pandemic situation will improve.

Consul-General Lu Shiwei, nevertheless, said last year was truly an extraordinary year due to the pandemic and serious global economic recession.

However, he pointed out, China was the first country to be able to contain the virus and to restore economic growth.

“We are also the only major economy to achieve positive growth,” he said.

Lu also urged everyone to avoid unnecessary travelling and gathering during the festival.

“I wish China and Malaysia prosperity and may the profound friendship between China and Malaysia be everlasting!

“I wish everyone good health, prosperity, family happiness, best luck and an auspicious new year!

Also present was Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng, who is also Chow’s political secretary.
