Fostering respect in multicultural society

THE celebration of Deepavali, or Festival of Light, reflects the country’s multiculturalism and plural society, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said.

Speaking to Bukit Mertajam folk who attended the Machang Bubok’s Deepavali open house today, Chow highlighted the opportunity for people of different races and religions to better understand each other’s festivals.

“The diversity of different celebrations in this country showcases our unity.

“For instance, we have the famous Indian cuisines here, and those present can take this opportunity to try out the delicacies offered.

“Through this celebration as well, we can enrich ourselves with different sets of culture learning in this multi-ethnic society,” he said during the open house celebration at Taman Impian, Alma.

During the open house, hundreds of people took their time off to be part of the celebration.

They enjoyed the captivating stage performances as well as the sumptuous food.

At the same time, Chow distributed Deepavali money packets to the kids.

Chow also emphasised the importance of respecting people’s cultures and religions in this society.

On another note, Chow was glad with the completion of the flood mitigation project at Kolam Alma.

“I believe the implementation of this project since a year ago would reduce the flood impact in the area,” he said.

Chow also thanked Machang Bubok assemblyman Lee Khai Loon for consistently monitoring the project for the sake of the residents.

Lee, who was present during the open house, expressed the importance of maintaining social harmony.

Among those distinguished guests present were Berapit assemblyman Heng Lee Lee, Padang Lalang assemblyman Daniel Gooi, who is also state Youth, Sports and Health Committee chairman, and Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) councillor Ong Jing Cheng.
