Fostering ties, celebrating family

THE Penang state government, through the collaboration of the office of state executive council member for Women and Family Development, Gender Inclusiveness, and Religions Other Than Islam and Penang Women’s Development Corporation (PWDC), is organising the state-level Family Day on June 15 this year from 8.30am to 4pm at Dewan Budaya, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).

The theme for this year is ‘Celebrating Family’ and it aims to create a space for interactions and knowledge sharing involving all segments of the society.

“In line with the Penang2030 vision to transform Penang into a ‘Family-Focused Green and Smart State that inspires the Nation’, this Family Day will highlight and raise awareness on the importance of family as a basic unit of society while fostering and enhancing bond between family members through interactive activities,” Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said when he launched the state-level Family Day: Celebrating Families event at Komtar this afternoon.

This celebration caters to participants from different age groups with inherent different needs.

The Forum Session 1, which is fittingly called ‘Plugged in Parenting’ focuses on how to raise a family in our rapidly changing digital age so that parents may utilise technologies effectively to enhance family well-being.

Meanwhile, Forum Session 2 provides the much-needed platform for the younger generation. In ‘Santai Anak Muda: Ke Alam Dewasa’ the millennial panelists with age ranging from 16 to 26 years old will have the opportunity to share their experience of growing up, what a family means to them and their aspirations.

The Chief Minister added that those in favour of interactive activity may choose to join ’Shared Responsibilty in a Family’ session where at least three family members are challenged to prepare morning tea together as a team.

“Participants can also sign-up for the ‘Station Games’ in which teams of four will overcome obstacles designed throughout the compound surrounding Dewan Budaya in USM.

“Additionally, we will have a ‘story telling’ for the kids to showcase their talents. Renowned international storyteller, Uncle Fat and our very own Ummi Sham will be joining the stage with our young ones too. They will be sharing stories on cherishing families,” Chow commented.

He said more than 2,000 participants from the public are expected to be part of this state celebration, where strategic partners including IPK College, QQ Kindergarten & Nursery and KDU Penang University College are making time and effort to make this Family Day a success.
