Caretaker state Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin commended Velvet Signature for their efforts in promoting Penang’s fashion industry.

Recognising fashion as a vital aspect of society, he emphasised its contribution to the creative economy.

Citing Statista’s report in 2022, which valued the global fashion industry at US$1.53 trillion, he highlighted the economic benefits derived by fashion capitals like Milan, Paris, Berlin and Tokyo.

“The influx of tourists during fashion-related events drives their tourism economy, showing the significance of supporting this industry in our state.

“This Fashion Week here provides a platform for fashion industry players not only to showcase their talents, but also put Penang on the world map while creating more business and job opportunities for Penang.

“Apart from showcasing our cultural heritage, the fashion industry will also enhance Penang’s reputation as a regional fashion hub and breathes new life into our industry. And this is my vision when I re-branded my portfolio as the creative economy.

“It is also my hope that one day we can brand Penang as the Milan of South East Asia, where all the happening of fashion will take place in Penang,” Yeoh said in his speech at the opening ceremony.
