Greater awareness on autism

THE Autism Acceptance Run 2019 (AAR 2019) will be held on April 28 to raise awareness towards the Autism Acceptance movement in Penang.

The run consists of three categories – the 6km fun run, 1.5km fun run (one special needs individual and a guardian), and the 1.5km fun run.

AAR 2019 is organised by City Stars Church and supported by Shine Like Stars Learning Centre. La Vintage Event Sdn Bhd is the collaboration partner of the event.

Organising chairman Daniel Saik said the run is a continuation of the annual Autism Acceptance Campaign (AAC) which was started in 2017.

“We are targeting about 1,800 participants. We hope to increase acceptance towards the autism and special needs community.

“We are thankful with the support from the Penang Hospital. Departments from the hospital will be setting up booths at the venue to offer free advice and consultation.

“Family-friendly activities such as face painting, DIY craft and much more will also be held,” he said on March 21 at Level 2 Moulmein Rise Shoppes.

Pulau Tikus assemblyman Chris Lee voiced his strong support towards the effort.

“I offer my full support for us to create a better world for our brothers and sisters with autism.

“We need to understand them because they are in a different ‘world’ than ours. Be patient and reach out,” Lee said.

The AAR 2019 was organised in conjunction with the World Autism Awareness Day.

It will be held at the Straits Quay Retail Marina in Tanjung Tokong from 7am to 11am on April 28.

The registration deadline is April 7 or when the 1,800 mark is reached.
