He said the education centre was a collaboration between three parties – Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (Upsi), Urbanest Sdn Bhd and the city council.

“The Green Education Centre will function as a research centre for various green projects such as community farming, upcycling and recycling activities, and composting organic waste that helps reduce what goes to landfills and provides a natural fertiliser to protect the environment.

“The centre will also be equipped with several system such as aquaponics, fertigation, Internet of Things (IoT) and others.

“The project is in line with the Penang2030 vision for a Family-Focused, Green and Smart State that Inspires the Nation,” Rozali said in his speech before taking part in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony at the MBSP headquarters building in Bandar Perda, Bukit Mertajam today.

Upsi was represented by its deputy vice-chancellor (student affairs and alumni) Prof Datuk Dr Md Amin Md Taff while Urbanest Sdn Bhd was represented by its managing director Karthigayan Gunasegaran.

Through the collaboration, Rozali said MBSP, Upsi and Urbanest would provide classes or training workshops, research and consultation, training module and many others for the local community to participate at the centre.

“We hope that the programmes will give a positive impact to the community, especially the youths. We hope to encourage them to be successful urban farmers,” he added.
