THE 68th ‘Annual Diwali Night’ organised by the Gujarati Samaj Penang was a colourful celebration with foot tapping Indian numbers and most importantly, the satisfying North Indian cuisines which brought the festive’s cheer before the official celebration in two days’ time.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow who graced the event applauded the Gujaratis’ spirit of togetherness and walking as a united community.

“The Gujaratis though small in numbers, are an enterprising and active community and your success in various fields are a testimony of your unity and strength as a community.

“On top of that, your aspirations and efforts to ensure that your community is united through your cultural, religious and sports activities is something admirable.

“And annually, the various communities with their diverse cultures showcase their cultural diversity during the George Town Heritage Festival. Thus we would like to thank Gujarati Samaj Penang for taking part in this event as well as participating in the International Conference on Managing Urban Cultural Heritage (MUCH) held from 1st October to 4th,” said Chow in his speech during the function which was held at the Majestic Theatre today.

Chow added that the celebration of major festivals such as Deepavali will help to reinforce mutual respect for all communities in the country.

“It is crucial that we attempt to further enhance the spirit of mutual understanding and goodwill within our multi-racial community through celebrations such as this,” noted Chow.
