THE management of Komtar has issued a reminder to all personnel to strengthen vigilance and crowd control measures following the death of an 18-year-old boy who fell from the building on July 24.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the Komtar operator had informed him that a memo was circulated to all staff after the incident, urging them to pay closer attention to safety procedures and the management of visitors at the facility.

He said the operator’s safety measures were also reviewed following confirmation from the Fire and Rescue Department that the company managing the facility had complied with the required safety elements and could continue its operations.

“The Fire and Rescue Department has confirmed that the operating company has complied with all safety requirements and has allowed the facility to continue operating.

“From the management side, they have also sent me a report that following this incident, a memo was issued to all personnel to pay attention to operations and crowd control at the facility, and to remain vigilant,” he said.

Chow was responding to questions from reporters on whether any further action had been taken at Komtar following the incident.

When asked if CCTV footage was available at the location where the teenager fell, Chow said he was unable to comment on the details of the footage but confirmed that he had been shown part of the CCTV recording.

“I cannot comment on the location. I was shown part of the CCTV footage,” he said.
