THE Penang government will set key performance indicators (KPIs) for all councillors under both local councils in the state, namely Penang Island City Council (MBPP) and Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) from this year.

State Local Government, Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said the KPIs would be a way to determine or evaluate how well the councillors perform during their tenure.

“It is the same KPI concept applied by other government departments for the goals that need to be achieved every year.

“The implementation of these KPIs can also ensure that the councillors carry out their duties and roles diligently, effectively and perfectly for the people’s benefit,” Jagdeep told a press conference at his office in Komtar today.

According to Jagdeep, there are three types of KPIs that need to be achieved by councillors.

He said the first was pertaining to their attendance at council meetings and any programmes conducted by the local council in which they could air their views.

The second would be on their participation in helping the state government conduct cleanliness programmes in their respective areas and using the allocation given prudently to benefit the areas they represent.

Jagdeep said the third assessment was on how the councillors deal with public complaints management, like whether they always go and meet people on the ground to understand more about local issues faced by the residents in their respective areas.

“As a councillor, they are responsible to solve public complaints in their area that falls under the jurisdiction of local council.

“And they need to present a monthly report regarding the progress of each complaint during a full council meeting,” he said.

Jagdeep said with the KPIs, the community would be more informed about the roles of a councillor in their areas.

He also urged every councillor to work together with both city councils and give their best services to the people in Penang.
