TWENTY-FIVE Lions Club chapters (Region 1 and 2) in Penang have pledged to support the state’s E-Learning Computer Programme.

The programme was aimed at providing digital learning devices for underprivileged students to pursue e-Learning.

The programme is assisted by its sub-taskforce called the ‘E-Refurbishing to E-Learning Computer Programme sub-taskforce’ to ensure continuous supply of used computers or laptops for the students. The programme can also prevent pollution caused by inappropriate disposal of e-waste.

The sub-taskforce which was launched on July 27 will finish their duty on Sept 26 this year.

Penang Women and Family Development, Gender Inclusiveness and Religions Other Than Islam Committee chairman Chong Eng believed that with the collaboration and support from various parties, the digital divide gap could be narrowed.

“No students should be left out. This initiative is meant to help make available the digital learning devices for needy students.

“I am happy and thankful that 25 Lions Club chapters will be helping the state in gathering the digital learning devices. The units will then be repaired before they are given to needy students for e-Learning purposes,” Chong Eng told a press conference in Komtar today.

Chong Eng said that apart from desktops and laptops, donors are welcomed to donate other smart devices such as smartphones and electronic tablets.

She hoped that more people could support the meaningful initiative.

The E-Refurbishing to E-Learning Computer Programme sub-taskforce head Chong Soon Kheng said the sub-taskforce aimed at collecting at least 200 units of used computers or laptops between now and Sept 26.

“Those units that are repairable will be given out to the needy students while the rest will be properly disposed,” Soon said.

Also present were Penang Lions Club D308 B2 district governor Datuk Yeoh Moh Chai and Penang E-Learning Computer Programme vice-chairman Ngoo Seong Boon.
