Local magazine on George Town reaching out to more readers

TARGETING a wider audience, ‘Penang City Eye’ magazine now has the English edition ‘City Eye On George Town – People, Places and Practices That Define Penang’ which was launched recently by state Tourism Development, Heritage, Culture and Arts Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin at the 2F+ Cafe Roastery Relau Penang.

According to Yeoh, Penang City Eye was first published in May 2014 as a free, independent community magazine mainly in Mandarin with inserts of English contents.

“As Malaysia’s first community culture and lifestyle publication, Penang City Eye is an observer, a chronicler and promoter of local culture and arts-related enterprises.

“In the last five years, two compilations were produced in book form and they gained good feedback from readers. Now, with the first English-language edition, it will reach out to a wider audience with its unique brand of reflective essays and visual storytelling,” said Yeoh at the launch on Dec30.

The magazine, creatively written, comes with captivating visuals to give the readers the opportunity of getting a glimpse of Penang’s rich history.

“This compilation of articles provides readers a window into Penang’s history as well as recent developments that have given the island-state a new lustre. It aims to foster a new understanding of and appreciation for Penang’s heritage, customs and creative endeavours.

“Penang (200 years of history) has gone through vast transformation over the years and Penang City Eye has documented all these changes that took place in George Town.

“Though George Town holds a history of 200 years, it never appears to be stuck in a time warp. Many projects are organised regularly to engage the public and communicate the evergreen value of the city’s heritage.

“Through events and activities such as heritage treasure hunts, cultural festivals and heritage internships, young and old work together to sustain the city’s youthful character and progressive outlook. Together, we make Penang better !” added Yeoh.

Also present during the launch were Asia File Corporation Berhad group executive chairman Datuk Michael Lim Soon Huat, Penang City Eye initiator Ng Wei Aik, Penang City Eye chief editor Chong Lee Choo and contributors of Penang City Eye.
