THE Penang government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the state’s healthcare ecosystem as it moves towards becoming a future-ready medical hub, said Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
Speaking at the Family Health Awareness Carnival held in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of LohGuanLye Specialists Centre at Gurney Plaza, Chow described the golden jubilee as a celebration of five decades of dedication, trust and service to the people of Penang and beyond.
“It is my great pleasure to join you today at this meaningful Family Health Awareness Carnival.

Today is not only a celebration of an important milestone, but also a celebration of five decades of dedication, trust and service to the people of Penang and beyond,” he said.
Chow noted that since its establishment in 1975, the hospital has grown into one of the state’s most respected healthcare institutions through continuous investments in medical technology, facility upgrades and talent development.
“Reaching a golden jubilee reflects the hospital’s resilience, professionalism and unwavering commitment to quality healthcare,” he said, adding that the institution has also strengthened Penang’s healthcare ecosystem and supported many livelihoods over the years.
He emphasised that healthcare must extend beyond treatment alone, commending the hospital’s outreach, education and charitable initiatives that bring the message of wellness closer to the community.
Highlighting the importance of prevention and healthy living, Chow said families play a crucial role in building healthier lifestyles amid rising non-communicable diseases and mental health challenges, especially among younger Malaysians.
“A healthier Penang cannot be built through hospitals alone. It requires stronger public awareness, healthier lifestyles and a culture of care where families, communities and institutions work hand in hand to support one another,” he said.

Chow stressed that the wellbeing of the people remains central to the Penang2030 vision, particularly as the state gradually becomes an ageing society that will require more coordinated and forward-looking healthcare solutions.
“At the state-level, we are actively strengthening Penang’s position as a leading medical and healthcare hub.
“Strategic developments such as the Penang Medi-City project in Batu Kawan reflect our long-term ambition to integrate healthcare services, wellness, medical technology, research and innovation into a future-ready ecosystem,” he said.
He added that Penang is now recognised as one of Malaysia’s leading medical tourism destinations, contributing nearly half of the nation’s medical tourism revenue.

“This achievement reflects the collective dedication of our hospitals, healthcare professionals and industry partners in upholding high standards of care, trust and medical excellence.
“LohGuanLye Specialists Centre has undoubtedly been an important contributor to this success, and for that, we extend our sincere appreciation,” he said.
Chow also congratulated the hospital on the launch of its 50th Anniversary Commemorative Book, describing it as a tribute to the founders, doctors, nurses, staff and supporters who shaped the institution.
“Health is not only a personal responsibility, but also a shared commitment. It begins at home, grows within our communities and ultimately strengthens the entire state,” he added.
Meanwhile, LohGuanLye Specialists Centre chief executive officer Dr Mary Quah expressed her appreciation to guests and partners for their support.
She said the hospital remains steadfast in its mission to serve the community.
“We would like to thank everyone for attending and supporting this meaningful event. The hospital will continue its hard work and commitment to serving the wider community,” she said.
Also present earlier were the state Social Development, Welfare and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman, Lim Siew Khim, and the state Youth, Sports and Health Committee chairman, Daniel Gooi Zi Sen.
