Malaysian Chemistry Department marks 110th anniversary with heritage run in George Town

A TOTAL of 1,115 participants took part in the ‘Kimia Heritage Run 110 Years’ which was organised by the Malaysian Chemistry Department (MCD) in a cool morning at the Esplanade today.

MCD director Mohamed Zaini Abdul Rahman said it was symbolic to celebrate the department’s 110th anniversary with a run in Penang.

Mohamed Zaini says it is symbolic to celebrate the Malaysian Chemistry Department’s 110th anniversary with a heritage run in George Town as the first branch of the department was set up in Penang in 1909.

He said MCD began with the setting up of its first government laboratory in 1885 in Singapore before establishing its first branch in Penang in 1909.

“We decided to hold the run at the UNESCO World Heritage Site in George Town for our 110th anniversary,” he said after jointly flagging off the 5km run with Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and Deputy Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Minister Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis.

A smooth start for participants of the ‘Kimia Heritage Run 110 Years’.

Chow said the state government congratulated the department for its services and contributions to the Malaysian people for 110 years in the scientific field.

“This event will enable the public to understand the role of the Malaysian Chemistry Department. I hope that during this period, MCD will achieve its objective in its celebration,” said Chow, who also visited the booths set up by MCD to showcase their activities and programmes.
