THE Penang Island City Council (MBPP) and Penang Chinese Chamber of Commerce Young Entrepreneur Section (PCCC YES) are jointly organising a virtual walking, running and cycling event called Penang Steps Up next month.

The event will kick off in conjunction with the George Town World Heritage Day on July 7 this year.

MBPP mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang said the event is aimed to unite people, especially Penangites, through walking, running and cycling at any given time or place in full compliance with the standard operating procedures (SOPs) set by the authorities.

“Participants are free to walk, run and cycle at their own pace, in their own neighbourhoods and in their own time.

“They only need to register for the virtual event, download the BiiB app to link to the event and sync their daily steps or distance cycled on their Google Fit or Apple Health applications on their smartphones,” Yew said during a virtual press conference held by MBPP today.

He also said the objective of the event is for all participants to record a collective 168 million steps and 28,000km rides in 14 days from July 7 to 20.

“Do note that the cycling event is dependent on the Covid-19 SOPs under the National Recovery Plan.

“We hope that more people will take part in this virtual event to take charge of their health and strengthen their immune system together.

“We are targeting up to 3,000 participants to sign up for the virtual event. We have received about 1,500 participants so far, even without officially opening the registration.

“Good to see that people are indeed concern about their health and the need to keep fit despite limited movements to carry out physical activities,” Yew added.

Among others who joined the press conference were PCCC YES chairman Lee Toong Leong and event organising chairman David Tan Wei Hua.
