THE ‘Jom Beli’ programme, which was introduced by the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) last year to help hawkers and small-time traders with their businesses, gets upgraded to Jom Beli 2.0 by opening to more business sectors.

MBPP alternate chairman of licensing & public health committee Nicholas Theng said the Jom Beli programme is a digital platform that was launched following the implementation of movement control order (MCO) on March 18, 2020.

“Initially, it was targeted to boost businesses for traders in the food sector by partnering with the food delivery companies, namely DeliverEat, GrabFood and foodpanda.

“Later on, we expanded the programme to those who are selling groceries, fresh produce as well as meat and seafood.

“Now, we are diversifying the platform to all business sectors operating at the council’s market, food complexes, temporary hawkers sites and temporary static hawker sites,” said Theng during a press conference today.

Theng added that out of 5,863 hawkers and small-time traders, a total of 853 have registered under the ‘Jom Beli’ programme to date.

“We hope that at least 30 percent of them (hawkers and small-time traders) would switch to the digital platform by end of this year.

“They can participate by registering with the food delivery partners or with companies, such as Touch & Go, Boost, Maybank QRPay and others as well.

According to Theng, the Jom Beli programme is currently continuing its partnership with DeliverEat and are looking for more delivery partners to participate in the programme.

“We have, our new deliver partner that is Syarikat Bungkusit, and for those who are interested, please send your proposal to the MBPP’s Licensing Department,” Theng said.
