IN view of the Chinese New Year celebration on Feb 1, the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) will be increasing the number of multi-lift garbage containers at several public markets considered as hotspots for waste disposal during the festive season.

According to MBPP councillor Nicholas Theng, the local council would be placing the extra multi-garbage containers at the Pulau Tikus, Taimina Sungai Ara, Campbell Street, Batu Lancang, Taman Free School, Air Itam and Farlim public markets.

“This is to make it easier for the public to dispose bulk wastes such as the old furniture, sofas, mattresses and pillows and other stuffs at these public markets, which are the hotspots for waste disposal during the festival,” said Theng during a press conference today.

Theng also said there will be an additional service for the bulk waste collection at the residential premises free of charge until Jan 31.

Theng added that the domestic waste collection at both the landed and multi-storey residential premises would be carried out as per the normal schedule throughout the festive period as well as on Chinese New Year (Feb 1 and 2).

“However, for communal and multi-lift garbage containers, there will be two collections done in a day from now until midnight of Jan 31.

“The first collection will be from 4am to 10am and the second will be from 12pm to 4pm,” he said.

Theng also said there will be an additional service for the bulk waste collection at the residential premises free of charge until Jan 31.

“This will be an extra service provided by the council during this festive season.

“Therefore, we request the residents to place the bulk waste in a proper container for collection.

“If there is overwhelming bulk waste, kindly contact MBPP at 04-2824284 for free special collection from now until Jan 31,” he said.

Meanwhile, Theng said the council strictly prohibits the public from giving out ‘angpows’ to the MBPP staff or the contractor for the waste collection services.

“We need the cooperation from the residents to not give any form of contributions to anyone.

“Should they find anyone committing such act, please contact MBPP’s hotline at 04-2637637 or MBPP Urban Services Department at 04-2633000 during office hours,” said Theng.

Also present during the press conference were MBPP Urban Services Department assistant director Mohd Zamzuri Hussain and MBPP councillor Nurhafiza Huda Idris.
