MBPP to waive rental fee temporarily for Farlim market and market complex traders

TO assist the traders at Farlim market and market complex with their businesses, the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has decided to exempt the rental payment for some time.

According to MBPP councillor Wong Yuee Harng, the ongoing flyover construction at Lebuhraya Thean Teik has affected their businesses.

He said there was a decline in the number of visitors and marketgoers to these places (market and market complex).

“So, the MBPP has approved giving rental exemption to the existing traders as well as the new traders.

“We will be giving this until the hoarding board or the walkaway for the traders is opened.

“We will be reviewing the rental payment exemption yearly,” Wong said when he was approached by reporters after the MBPP’s full council meeting today.

The  full council meeting was chaired by MBPP mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang. Also present was MBPP secretary Datuk A. Rajendran.

On a separate matter, MBPP councillor R. Hari Krishnan, during his speech at MBPP’s full council meeting, brought up the issues concerning playgrounds and pocket parks on the island.

Hari Krishnan

“The playground is a place where children like to play their favourites, like the seesaw, slide, swing, tunnel and many others.

“But are the playgrounds and pocket parks built here still kid-centered?

“From my observation lately, I see the playgrounds and pocket parks are only equipped with gym equipment for adults.

“I feel that the adults can even exercise without that equipment. The equipment will not attract children, however,” Hari Krishnan said.

He also suggested that more play items be placed by the council at playgrounds and pocket parks.

“I hope the MBPP can look into the matter seriously to provide a conducive playing environment for our children,” he added.
