THE repair works of Kompleks Astaka Stadium Bandaraya in Jalan Perak are almost completed and expected to be ready by the end of next month.

State Local Government, Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said currently the repair works at the food complex only involved utility works and some minor repairs.

“The repair works are conducted by the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) at a total cost of around RM200,000.

“We are also considering expanding the affected stall lots at the food complex.

“We want to ensure that the project is completed within the stipulated time by the end of March,” Jagdeep told a press conference during a site visit at the place today.

Also present was Jelutong MP R.S.N. Rayer.

Some parts of Kompleks Astaka Stadium Bandaraya in Jalan Perak, involving eight stalls, were destroyed by fire on Jan 18.

There are a total of 18 hawkers operating at the food court.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident. Among the affected hawkers are those selling tomyam, nasi campur and drinks.

During his site visit today, Jagdeep also handed out an RM88,000 mock cheque to all the affected traders as financial aid.

“From that amount, RM44,000 is from my office allocation and another RM44,000 was contributed by YB Rayer,” he said.

Rayer said such a contribution also shows that they care about the problem faced by the constituents in the area.

He also hoped that the MBPP could complete the project within the timeline.
