THE Meng Eng Soo Open Day 2022 was back physically this year as part of celebrating the George Town World Heritage Day after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Open Day, which is held yearly, was also to commemorate the establishment of Meng Eng Soo Temple as one of the earliest Chinese associations in Penang some 200 years ago.

It was also in honour of the Ghee Hin organisation, which was founded in 1786.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who was the guest of honour, was delighted to be present physically this year.

“I am very happy to be able to participate in this event again, which is aimed at promoting a harmonious environment and inculcating the importance of valuing cultures of the ethnic groups.

“In the past two years, the event was held virtually, thanks to the organiser.

“The theme for this year’s event is ‘Jejak Warisan’ to ensure everyone has the opportunity to learn and explore the old history.

“I hope that more people can value our ancestors’ dedication to the community,” he said in his speech after attending the event in Jalan Pintal Tali, George Town this evening.

Chow said the state would do its best to upkeep George Town as a Unesco World Heritage Site since obtaining the listing 14 years ago on July 7, 2008.
