ZERO plastic usage is achievable with a shift in mindset. Small, intentional steps can lead to big changes, says Madam Tan Lean Kee, wife of Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
Tan who is also the chairman of Pertubuhan Wanita Mutiara Pulau Pinang (PWMPP) shared this during the launch of ‘Zero Plastic Usage Awareness Campaign: Tiffin Carrier Giveaway Ceremony’ at the PAWE Jelutong’s centre at Jalan Air Itam on Oct 10.
She emphasised that while plastic products bring convenience to everyday life, they pose serious threats to marine life, the environment as a whole, and human health.
“I believe if we can do away with plastic bags, likewise, we can reduce it, eventually eliminate plastic cutleries and packaging too.
“In support of PAWE’s commitment to the ‘No Single-use Plastic’ campaign, PWMPP will be donating over 100 tiffin carriers to its members.
“Please make it a habit to bring the tiffin carriers and water containers when you ‘tapau’ food or drinks. Educate your friends of family on the importance of reducing plastic consumption.
“The future of our planet, its wildlife, and the well-being of our children all lie in our hands. Let us unite as a force for positive change and build a cleaner, healthier world, one where future generations can grow and thrive in a better environment,” Tan added.

Meanwhile, State Housing and Environment Committee chairman, Datuk Seri Sundarajoo Somu shared that the state government has fully launched the ‘Penang No Plastic Bag Everyday Campaign 2025,’ underscoring its unwavering commitment to environmental protection.
Sundarajoo said that everything is difficult at the beginning. Many years ago, when the state government launched the ‘No Free Plastic Bags’ campaign, it faced various challenges but overcame them one by one.
“People gradually adapted to using eco-friendly bags for shopping. The ‘Penang No Plastic Bag Everyday Campaign 2025’ will further contribute to creating a better environment,” Sundarajoo said.
Sundarajoo also distributed canvas bags to the members as a gesture of supporting PAWE’s zero plastic campaign.
PAWE Jelutong president Datuk Seri Lawrence Cheah said the initiative aims to raise environmental awareness, promote sustainable daily practices, reduce plastic use, and encourage eco-friendly food packaging.
Cheah thanked Sundarajoo for championing the zero-plastic campaign, highlighting the state government’s commitment to a cleaner, greener Penang.
He also lauded Tan, the patron, for supporting PAWE Jelutong’s initiative by distributing eco-friendly containers to its members and encouraging them to bring their own when purchasing food or drinks, thereby promoting a ‘less plastic’ lifestyle.
