A modern pageant is no longer defined by beauty alone, but has evolved into a celebration of confidence, intelligence, character, cultural pride and purpose, said Penang Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai.

Wong said pageants today provide women with a platform to raise their voices, champion meaningful causes and inspire others through their leadership and achievements.

“Every contestant represents not only herself, but also the values, aspirations and diversity of her community,” he said in his speech at the Miss Asia Global 2026 held at Butterworth Arena.

Wong said he was particularly pleased that Miss Asia Global embraces the principles of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including good health and well-being, gender equality, reduced inequalities, and sustainable cities and communities.

“These are not merely global aspirations. They reflect the kind of society we want to build, one where women are empowered, diversity is celebrated and every individual has the opportunity to contribute meaningfully.

“Through platforms such as Miss Asia Global, young women can become influential ambassadors for well-being, equality, inclusivity and positive social change,” he said.

Wong also highlighted the strong connection between pageantry and tourism, noting that both bring together people from different countries, cultures and backgrounds while creating opportunities for meaningful cultural exchange.

“Most importantly, both allow us to tell the story of a destination to the world,” he said.

According to Wong, Penang is a place where Asia truly comes together, with its multicultural heritage, living traditions, creative energy, celebrated gastronomy and warm hospitality giving the state an identity unlike anywhere else.

“From the historic streets of George Town to our beaches, hills, festivals and diverse communities, Penang offers visitors not simply a destination, but an experience filled with character and stories,” he said.

Wong said the Penang government remained committed to positioning the state as a leading destination for international tourism and events.

He said hosting international platforms such as Miss Asia Global was important in generating global visibility for Penang, encouraging cultural exchange and contributing to the state’s tourism and creative economy.

“An international pageant does exactly that,” he said.
