Mulling setting up Arts and Cultural Zone in Butterworth

THE Penang government, through the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP), is committed to developing the area from Jalan Heng Choon Thien to Jalan Jeti Lama and from Jalan Bagan Luar to Jalan Dato Haji Ahmad Said in Butterworth.

State Tourism Development, Arts, Culture and Heritage Committee (Petach) chairman Yeoh Soon Hin (PH – Paya Terubong) said the state government is considering suggestion to brand or promote the area as an Arts and Cultural Zone.

“The state government has organised various programmes, such as Butterworth Fringe Festival 2018 at Jalan Jeti Lama and the Penang Arts Week 2019 at Padang Dataran Pemuda Merdeka in Butterworth, to uplift the arts and culture,” said Yeoh when answering a question posed by M. Satees (PH – Bagan Dalam) who wanted to know more about the state government’s commitment to developing the area at the State Legislative Assembly sitting today.

“The variety of arts and cultural activities held at the various programmes had drawn many visitors to the area.”

Yeoh added that to enhance the vibrancy of arts and cultural scene, the state government, through MBSP, would hold the Butterworth Fringe Festival 2019 on Dec 7 and 8.
