THE 30th International Congress of the Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society of Malaysia (OGSM) was officially launched today at the Setia SPICE Convention Centre.

Caretaker Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who was the guest of honour at the event, commended OGSM for their proactive initiatives concerning women’s health.

“As we gather here, I am reminded of the government’s Health White Paper which envisions Malaysia to be a healthy nation with equitable, resilient, open, and innovative healthcare system that is valued by the people.

“The Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society of Malaysia, being our country’s largest obstetric and gynecological society with over 1500 members, plays a critical role in making this vision a reality.

“I also want to congratulate OGSM on its remarkable achievements in advancing scientific development and providing advocacy for women’s health, both nationally and internationally.

“Your ongoing efforts to improve women’s health through various projects and initiatives as part of the society’s social responsibility are truly praiseworthy,” Chow said during his speech at the event.

The congress will take place until July 23.

Chow said like OGSM, the state government is committed to giving emphasis on women’s health and their well-being.

Chow shared that it extends beyond physical well-being as the Penang government strives to empower women in every aspect of their lives.

The state government wants to foster a healthy family where every woman’s voice is heard and valued.

Chow shared that the Penang Women’s Development Corporation (PWDC) has been instrumental in implementing the “Gender Inclusiveness Policy and Safe Family Policy”, alongside other various women’s empowerment.

Notable initiatives, such as the Women’s Conference, Penang Women Entrepreneur Mentoring Programme, and Wanita Jana Rezeki, exemplify the state government’s commitment to women’s well-being.

In line with these efforts, the state government has allocated a budget of RM2.5 million for the year 2023.

Penang has also taken significant steps to create safe spaces for families, combat domestic violence and provide support for victims

The state has a total of 245 First Support Point Officers stationed across 50 locations, including state representatives service centres, District and Land offices, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and houses of worship.

Furthermore, workshops have been conducted for 102 participants from the police (PDRM) to enhance their skills in handling cases of domestic violence.

Chow revealed that the Women and Family Development Committee (JPWK) in all 40 constituencies have successfully handled 344 projects from January to July 2023.

The projects focus on economic empowerment, family affairs, and human rights, aligning with the Penang2030 Vision.

While Chow welcomed 1,077 female volunteers known as RELANITA members, he expressed hopes that more women can volunteer and actively participate in these projects.

To support these initiatives, the state government has allocated RM1.76 million for allowances and programme implementation.

With the collective efforts between OGSM and the state government, Chow is confident that a healthier and more equitable future awaits women in Penang, Malaysia and beyond.
