Nurture unity in community

THE Penang government is organising two programmes under the LovePENANG campaign to foster unity in the community.

 

Firstly, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow announced the LovePENANG Cup Basketball Championship which is open to Penangites aged 18 and above for the Men’s Category, and 13 and above for the Women’s Category.

 

The basketball championship is jointly organised by the state government, Penang State Sports Council (MSNPP), Penang Basketball Association and South Seberang Perai Basketball Association.

“Some 40 teams have registered for the basketball championship.

 

“The opening ceremony of the event will be held at the indoor basketball court in Perkampungan Jawi on July 26. The preliminary rounds for the teams from the mainland will also be held at the same venue.

 

“Meanwhile, the teams from Penang island will compete in the preliminary rounds at Azman Hashim Stadium in Universiti Sains Malaysia.

 

“The finals will be held at Han Chiang Stadium at 8pm on Aug 28,” he told a media conference in Komtar today.

 

 

Chow said trophies and medals would be presented to the preliminary and finals winning teams.

 

“In addition, the teams that win the finals will also bring home cash prizes,” he said.

 

Chow hoped that the competition could be a platform to unearth the talents of the young generation and promote a healthy community.

 

Secondly, Chow introduced the LovePENANG eSport Championship 2022 which offers a prize pool of RM10,000.

 

“Two eSport games will be contested in this championship, namely, the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and Tekken 7.

 

“Mobile Legends: Bang Bang participants will compete in the qualifying rounds via online on Aug 20.

 

“The playoff for the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and Tekken 7 will be held at 1st Avenue Mall on Aug 27,” he said.

 

The eSport championship is jointly organised by the Penang government, Penang Youth Development Corporation (PYDC), Blackbox Penang, MSNPP, ESM Pulau Pinang and Howei Events.

 

Also present were Penang Youth and Sports Committee chairman Soon Lip Chee, MSNPP director Harry Chai and PYDC general manager Dr Gwee Sai Ling.
