Nurturing a love for science in students

EXCITING and engaging talks, science demonstrations, competitions, and workshops for primary and secondary school students will be among the many activities held during the upcoming 9th Penang International Science Fair (PISF).

This year, the PISF will held virtually for over two weeks from Nov 20 to Dec 5.

Some 10,000 participants are expected to take part in the fair.

As in previous years, the PISF is a result of the collaboration between the Penang government and the industries that form the backbone of the Penang Science Cluster (PSC).

Themed ‘Possibilities Enabled’, the fair will see the participation of 26 companies and over 80 schools.

PSC chief executive officer Ooi Peng Ee said there are also over 5,600 workshop slots available for interested participants.

“The students can also learn more about career opportunities by participating in the career talks,” he told an online press conference today.

The registration of interest for the career talks and the workshops is now open.

Ooi thanked the Penang government and the companies which are participating in the fair.

“Our efforts will help to inspire our students in science, technology and innovation,” he said.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the lives and livelihoods of the people were disrupted due to Covid-19.

Chow takes part in the virtual press conference of the PISF 2021.

“Our annual PISF was also not spared last year when it had to be cancelled. It was, indeed, a disruptive time for all of us.

“Fast forward to today, we are now in a better situation following the progress of the Covid-19 vaccination in Penang.

“Together, all of us are adapting the new normal, or what we deemed as ‘Living with Covid’.

“Likewise, PISF would have to ‘adapt’ too, taking on virtual features while retaining the key elements to stimulate the interest of students to learn science,” he said.

Chow said that the Penang government and the industries in Penang recognise the importance of developing young students as future talents.

“These talents will fuel the growth of our industries, economy, and country in time to come,” he said.

The participants of the virtual press conference take a group photo after the media conference.

He thanked the PSC, volunteers and all those who had contributed towards ensuring the success of PISF 2021.

Among those present at the virtual press conference were PSC director Datuk Yoon Chon Leong, Penang STEM general manager Richard Chung, and Penang Math Platform general manager Johnny Ong.
