THE launch of the Green Schools 2014 competition saw excited students from schools on the island gathering at Komtar for the event.
Primary and secondary school children whipped out their notebooks and iPads to take down notes at the event.
The launch by Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) secretary Ang Aing Thye on March 4 saw 65 schools signing up to participate compared with the 41 which took part last year.
“This is the fifth year MPPP is organising the competition and we hope more schools will participate.
“Selection is based on recycling efforts, innovation and creativity, cleanliness, greening of school and involvement of the community.”

Prizes are sponsored by Suiwah Corporation, E&O Property (Penang) Sdn Bhd and Sunway Grand Sdn Bhd.
The champion will receive RM2,000, a trophy and certificate but all schools which take part and submit reports of their projects will also receive a consolation prize.

Sekolah Menengah Sungai Ara is participating for the first time but they are looking forward to involve all the children in the project.
Form Four student Samsul Syakiran told Buletin Mutiara:“We are practising recycling in our school by separating the trash into plastic, paper and glass. We also have a composting heap where the students produce fertiliser. At home, I also adopt the 3Rs.”

Schools on the island which are interested in taking part may contact Roslinawati Mohd Rashid at 04-259 2121 or email [email protected] or go to the MPPP website at mppp.gov.my to download the participation form.

Closing date for participation is April 30 while complete reports of school projects must be submitted by Jun 15.

The enthusiasm and excitement to participate is obvious with these primary school pupils busy taking notes during the briefing.
