MORE than 100 senior citizens from the Golden Hope PAWE Jelutong Seniors Activity Centre gathered at Gurney Bay Hotel in Penang recently for a Merdeka 69 Celebration Lunch filled with patriotic spirit, camaraderie and fellowship.
The gathering, which brought together members and guests from diverse backgrounds, came alive with enthusiastic shouts of “Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka!” as the seniors celebrated Malaysia’s 69th Merdeka anniversary.
The celebration was attended by Madam Tan Lean Kee, wife of Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and patron of PAWE Jelutong, as well as PAWE Jelutong chairman Datuk Seri Lawrence Cheah Seong Paik and other guests.
One of the highlights of the event was the cutting of the Merdeka cake, led by Tan, Cheah and other guests. The celebration also included a special recognition of the August birthday boys and girls.
Adding to the festive atmosphere was the Merdeka Best-Dressed Parade, which saw participants proudly donning colourful Merdeka-themed attire. The parade drew cheers, laughter and applause from fellow participants and guests.
In their messages, Tan and Cheah highlighted the significance of Merdeka and the struggles and sacrifices made by previous generations in achieving the nation’s independence.
They stressed that, after 69 years, Merdeka should not be viewed merely as a historical event but as an ongoing commitment to safeguarding freedom, unity, racial harmony, peace and goodwill among Malaysians.
They also emphasised the important role of the younger generation in shaping the country’s future, expressing hope that young Malaysians with a strong sense of purpose would continue to build a modern, progressive and harmonious nation.
For the seniors, Merdeka carries a special significance as many of them have personally witnessed Malaysia’s transformation over the decades.
Their message to Malaysians is clear — cherish the country’s freedom, respect differences, care for one another and work together to build a nation where people of all backgrounds can live in peace and dignity.
The celebration served not only as an occasion for the seniors to enjoy lunch and fellowship, but also as an opportunity to reaffirm their appreciation for Malaysia’s independence and their hopes for the country’s future.
