THE Taman Terubong Jaya public market and food complex in Paya Terubong recently had six of the 18 squatting toilets upgraded to sitting toilets as requested by the market-goers there.

Penang Island City Council (MBPP) councillor Tan Soo Siang, who funded the entire upgrading works at a cost of RM12,000 from her councillor’s allocation, said the public there had previously complained about the discomfort of using squatting toilets and requested for an upgrade to sitting toilets.

“People who often visit this market and food complex are usually between 40 and 70 years old. Due to the difficulty of using the squatting toilets, most of them started using the toilet designated for the disabled.

“To avoid this from happening and for the benefit of all, it was best to upgrade the toilet facility to a more preferred and comfortable style for the people,” Tan said during a visit to inspect the completion of the upgrading works at the Taman Terubong Jaya public market and food complex in Paya Terubong.

The upgrading works began on Nov 24 and were completed on Dec 7.

The three-floored building has two restrooms (male and female) on each floor, and out of the three toilets in each restroom, one seated facility was installed.

Also present during the visit were state Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin and MBPP mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang.
