THE Penang government welcomes any possible collaboration between the state and Hong Kong to further boost the economic growth in Penang.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state looked forward to collaborate with Hong Kong to strengthen the economic growth and trade relations.

“The Penang government is also open to possible collaborations in new areas,” he said.

Delegates from the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Jakarta paid a courtesy on Chow at his office today.

The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Jakarta represents the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government in matters between Hong Kong and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as a whole.

The office handles, in particular, matters between Hong Kong and four ASEAN countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei and the Philippines; while the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Singapore focuses on the other six ASEAN countries.

Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Jakarta director-general Kin-Wai Law, who led the delegates, said Penang and Hong Kong shared similarities in many areas.

“Penang has a lot of potential, especially in economic growth. There are many areas for both Hong Kong and Penang to look at.

“Areas such as eCommerce, digital economy and artificial intelligence.

“We look forward to sharing our experiences and learning from Penang,” Law said.

Later, Chow invited the delegates to take part in the World Congress on Information Technology (WCIT) which will be held in Penang from Sept 13 to 16 next year at Setia SPICE Convention Centre in Bayan Lepas.

Responding to that, Law said that it would be an honour for them to take part in the event.

Law also encouraged other entrepreneurs from Hong Kong to participate.

Also present were Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Jakarta deputy director Ricky Cheng and its commercial relations officer Rayson I.C. Hutapea.
