Penang Arts Week to debut this month

YOUNG art enthusiasts in Penang will have something to cheer in the upcoming school holidays when they get the opportunity to explore the first-ever Penang Arts Week from March 24 to 31.

Organised by state government, the seven-day long event is expected to showcase numerous works of relatively undiscovered artists in the state. Through their creativity, one can expect diverse artistic techniques.

Several performances, light show and 3D arts-related exhibition will feature in the grand opening ceremony at the Esplanade on March 24 at 7pm.

The highlight will be the ‘Animal Kingdom in the City’ plant sculptures exhibition which will see amazing animal topiaries displayed.

Among the interesting exhibitions are ‘Our Beloved Prime Minister’ collage art exhibition and ‘Heritage Through The Eyes of Young Artists’ arts exhibition by ATEC Academy of New Media Design  at the Performing Arts Centre of Penang, ‘Wiring Arts Exhibition’ by Lee Siang Arts Studio at Queensbay Mall, ‘The Diversity of Art: A joint exhibition at St Jo’s Gurney Paragon’, ‘Wind in One’s Sail’ Arts Exhibition and ‘My Creative City’ Youth Art Competition by Yeow Chye Art Studio and Penang Art District at Gurney Plaza.

“It is part of the state’s efforts to promote the art and tourism industry. We want art to be something closer to the people,” said state Tourism Development, Arts, Culture and Heritage Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin.

“We are now working to make the state a tourism market which is one of main sectors in the services industry.”
