MOTORISTS in Penang have warmly welcomed PLUS Malaysia’s pilot testing of the open payment toll collection system at the Penang Bridge, allowing commuters to use credit and debit cards for toll payments.

Last Friday (March 15), PLUS Malaysia via its Facebook page, announced that Penang Bridge users can make payment via debit and credit card at lanes displaying the MyDebit, Visa, and Mastercard logos.

Additionally, eligible Penangites will also enjoy a 20% discount on the Penang Bridge toll when using bank cards or Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) for payment.

During a random survey conducted by the Buletin Mutiara yesterday (March 20), several commuters expressed their delight and satisfaction with the introduction of this new payment system.

“It is good news indeed, as I do not have to carry multiple cards.

“This new initiative will help to alleviate traffic congestion, especially during peak hours, and it can save us time.

“Maybe PLUS can consider opening additional lanes for debit and credit card payments, which would result in shorter queues at the toll booths.”

“Before hearing the announcement, I was discussing with my family why bank cards could not be used at the Penang Bridge toll.

“I was thrilled when I learned about the new open payment system at the Penang Bridge toll.

“It’s a great step forward, making things much easier for us, especially during emergencies. We no longer need to worry if we forget to reload our cards.

“This will also make it more convenient for the senior citizens.

“Being able to use credit cards and debit cards to pay tolls is convenient because it provides more payment options. So now, I do not have to depend solely on the Touch ‘n Go card.

“For instance, if I am unable to find my Touch ‘n Go at the toll plaza, I can use my credit card or debit card without feeling anxious.

“On top of that, Penang residents can also apply for a 20% discount for the toll payment using bank cards, which is a kind gesture from PLUS Malaysia.”
