Penang firm goes digital to recruit cleaners

AN established company in the cleaning industry became the first in Penang to launch a mobile app to recruit members to join its Cleanions crew recently.

Bumiteras Resources Sdn Bhd, a household brand of Baby Goh’s Cleaners since 1990s, is now providing the on-demand cleaning service platform to also help the underprivileged, like the B40 and single mothers impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Bumiteras Resources managing director Debbie Lim said their app, which was launched last month, could help those interested to be cleaners to earn about RM2,000 a month if they are committed.

“We’ve been in the cleaning business for over 30 years. We had the idea of coming up with an app three years ago and decided to give it a go this year.

“We want to support single mothers, abused women, the underprivileged, lower-income group, the deaf and dumb, and the unskilled to earn some money during this recovery movement control order.

“This is the first time we have come up with an app. We’ve now 25 members and we are targeting 200 by the end of the year.

“They will do cleaning works in office and shop lots, which is not as tedious as house cleaning. We’ll provide them proper training,” said Lim.

She said her company hopes to engage with more women and family development committees (JPWK) after having successfully collaborated with the Sungai Pinang JPWK by holding a recruitment drive at the service centre of Sungai Pinang assemblyman Lim Siew Khim on Nov 1.

She said new recruits would be briefed on the terms and conditions, such as they need to have an android mobile phone, own transportation and would not be provided EPF, Socso and insurance cover.

Lim, however, said they are encouraged to take up insurance coverage themselves. She also stressed that they are not employers and recruits are freelancers, like Grab drivers.

“We will do compulsory background checks, like whether they have any criminal records or involved in any substance abuse, to protect customers,” she said.

No qualification is needed for recruits, who can be from 18 and 65 years old. They can work within their own vicinity and flexi hours.

She said even college students from needy families, who want to do part-time jobs, can also register as long as they are not fussy or do not mind cleaning toilets.

Lim said they would be paid RM12 per hour and for those committed ones, they would be given incentives by her company – RM10 for logging more than 20 hours per week, RM15 for more than 30 hours and RM20 for more than 40 hours.

The payout to the crew members would be on a weekly basis.

Lim said after having recruited a pool of crew members, her company would welcome customers through an app from January next year.

She said her company, which has so far invested about RM100,000 for the digital initiative, would charge a customer RM19.90 for an hour of service. The minimum requirement for service is two hours.

The customer has to validate the cleaner’s hours of work and then pay through online banking. Bumiteras is using BillPiz payment gateway.

First-time user, she said, would be given a RM5 coupon rebate. As an added value for customers, there is a point system reward for every new reload into their Cleanions app credit.
