Penang food gets Michelin recognition

PENANG can now be counted as an internationally-recognised food paradise after receiving an accolade from the Michelin Guide tonight.

In an announcement by the renowned food guide during the Michelin Guide Kuala Lumpur and Penang 2023 Revelation and Gala Dinner at Berjaya Times Square in Kuala Lumpur tonight, there were a total of 19 eateries awarded with Bib Gourmand and Michelin 1 Star categories.

The Bib Gourmand winners are Hokkien Mee at C.Y. Choy, Communal Table by gēn, Duck Blood Curry Mee, Green House Prawn Mee Corner, Ivy’s Nyonya Cuisine, Ming Qing Charcoal Duck Egg Char Koay Teow, Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay & Canteen, Neighbourwood, Penang Road Famous Laksa, Rasa Rasa, Sardaarji – Flavours of Punjab, Taman Bukit Curry Mee, Tek Sen Restaurant, Thara Penang, Theeni Pandarams, Tho Yuen Restaurant, and Wan Dao Tou Assam Laksa.

The Michelin 1 Star Winners are Auntie Gaik Lean’s Old School Eatery and Restaurant Au Jardin.

On top of that, 27 food operators in the state have also been selected by the Michelin Guide tonight.

State Tourism and Creative Economy Yeoh Soon Hin, who was present, thanked Michelin Guide for the award and recognition given.

 

“It is a historical day for the state as Penang is being placed on the world’s culinary map with this recognition.

Yeoh speaking during the event.

“The state has successfully established itself as an important tourism destination with this achievement.

“Michelin Guide plays a prominent role to lift the state’s tourism industry,” he said.

Yeoh said the state was committed to promoting local food.

“Penang is widely known to be the local food paradise and this recognition will further enhance the state’s image,” he said.

Among those present during the event were Berjaya Corp founder Tan Sri Vincent Tan, CF Capital co-founder Chryseis Tan, Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Daniel Gooi, Batu Lanchang assemblyman Ong Ah Teong, Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) national vice president Datuk Khoo Boo Lim, state MAH chapter chairman Tony Goh, Penang Global Tourism (PGT) chief executive officer Ooi Chok Yan and Chief Minister Incorporated (CMI) deputy general manager S. Bharathi.
