THIS year’s ‘Penang Goes Orange’ (PGO) campaign will take a rather different approach than usual by conducting walkabouts across all five districts in the state.

The theme for this year is ‘Reshape – Respect – Rebuild: Towards A Safe Penang’.

A campaign dedicated to raising awareness of violence against women and children, it is back this year for its 19th edition with a string of interesting events slated to take place in each district.

PGO is a collaborative effort by the Penang government and the Penang Women’s Development Corporation (PWDC).

PWDC chief executive officer Ong Bee Leng said the official opening ceremony of the campaign will kickstart at Level 3, Komtar on Nov 29, followed by the first walkabout in the northeast district on the island.

“On the same day, we will be having the ‘Karnival Oren’, in which a total of 80 booths will be set up selling various things, as well as exhibition booths by the state government agencies highlighting their respective roles.

“We will also be having a forum that is expected to gather some 200 civil servants on the same day,” Ong said during a press conference in Komtar today.

The campaign will end on Dec 11.

The subsequent walkabouts are due to take place at Pantai Esen in the southwest district on Dec 3, Lotus Seberang Jaya in the central Seberang Perai district on Dec 4, Jawi Arena in the south Seberang Perai district on Dec 10 and lastly at Vision Park in Kepala Batas on Dec 11.

State Social Development and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Chong Eng, who was present during the press conference, thanked all the state government agencies, both the local councils, strategic partners and relevant parties for joining hands in this initiative.
