THE Penang government has pledged full cooperation with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) following an investigation into allegations of abuse of power by a senior state officer.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state will give MACC unrestricted access to carry out its probe.

“This matter was explained during the State Legislative Assembly sitting in November, but since it has been raised again, and with MACC already commenced with its investigations, we will allow the due process to take place.

“The government is not an investigating body, and therefore we will wait for MACC’s findings,” he said when asked by reporters on the matter during his Thaipusam walkabout in Jalan Utama today.

The investigation concerns claims that a senior officer misused zakat funds to purchase land.

MACC investigators have reportedly visited several offices linked to the case to obtain relevant documents, which are currently being reviewed.
