Penang govt thinking ahead to stay ahead

CHIEF Minister Chow Kon Yeow has directed Penang Development Corporation (PDC) to start looking at north Seberang Perai as the next area of development after Batu Kawan.

“Currently, the focus is in Batu Kawan because that is where land is available. But in time, it would also reach saturation point.

“In five or 10 years, whatever land that is made available in south Seberang Perai would be developed. Hence, it is about time for us to focus our attention towards the north,” Chow said in an interview on Bernama Property Hot Seat today.

Chow says the future of Penang is in Seberang Perai.

Chow said it was prudent for the state to look at north Seberang Perai, considering that the proposed undersea tunnel project would be connecting the island and the north Seberang Perai.

The programme hosts Datuk Seri Vincent Tiew and Chris Tan questioned Chow on the Penang2030 vision, Penang Transport Master Plan, affordable housing supply and the Penang International Airport.

Chow said Penang did not aspire to be another Singapore or Dubai.

“We are not trying to be another Singapore. We are happy to be a state that is self-sustainable and has high level of liveability.

“We want to present Penang as a smart and green state. We do not aspire to be another Singapore, Dubai or any city of that nature,” he said.
