PENANG-born pianist Vincent Ong has brought pride to the state after clinching fifth place at the 19th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition held in Poland, which is considered one of the world’s most prestigious classical music contests.
Vincent, 24, stood out among nearly 700 pianists representing 54 countries, a feat hailed as “extraordinary” by state Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai.
“I want to congratulate Vincent Ong, who has made Penang proud on the world stage. This is an extraordinary achievement for a 24-year-old Penangite,” said Wong.
He said Vincent’s success reflected years of quiet discipline, perseverance and self-belief.
“Vincent’s success is not just a personal victory, but it is a reminder of what Penang people are capable of when we hold on and do not give up.
“He has shown that with discipline and passion that Penang talents can shine at the international level,” Wong said.

Wong added that he had personally written to congratulate Vincent and extended an invitation for him to return for a homecoming solo recital in Penang.
“I hope the people of Penang will have the chance to witness his journey with their own eyes, to feel that moment when one of our own stands on stage and shows the world what Penang talent looks like,” he said.
Describing Vincent’s achievement as “more than an award”, Wong said it would inspire the next generation of young Penangites to pursue excellence in their own fields.
“Penang waits to welcome you home,” he said.
