THE iconic Penang State Museum in Farquhar Street, which is undergoing a restoration process, is expected to be reopened to the public next year.

State Museum and Art Gallery director Haryany Mohamad said restoration works are being conducted in two phases.

“Phase One is slated to be completed by the middle of next year while the final phase is to be wrapped up by end of next year.

“An extensive interior layout will be completed in the final phase.

“We expect the museum to attract about 5,000 visitors a month once it is open to the public.

“The opening is scheduled in view of the International Museum Day next year,” she said at a press conference at State Museum today.

State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin was glad that the museum would be reopened.

“Museums are considered to be an important aspect of our daily lives as visitors can look forward to witnessing various attractions.

“The attractions are the likes of artifacts, digital technology and the old Penang Free School classrooms,” he said.

Yeoh said he has the inspiration to establish more museums in the future.

“There are many museums in a city in other countries and I believe more should be established here as well,” he said.
