THE Penang government has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to strengthening youth sports development, recognising young athletes as the foundation of the nation’s future sporting success.
State Youth, Sports and Health Committee chairman Daniel Gooi Zi Sen said investing in youth sports today would pave the way for a stronger and more competitive sporting landscape in the years ahead.
“We believe that investing in young athletes is an investment in the future of our nation.
“Through strong partnerships with sports associations, government agencies, educational institutions and the private sector, we will continue creating opportunities for young talent to flourish,” Gooi said in his speech during the welcome dinner for the 22nd PBA Penang International Junior Squash Championship at the St Giles Wembley Hotel in George Town this evening.
Also present were Penang State Sports Council (MSNPP) director Harry Chai Heng Hua, Penang Squash Rackets Association president Datuk Linda Geh and Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) group chief financial officer Dr Mary Ann Harris.
Gooi also paid tribute to the coaches and parents whose unwavering support plays a vital role in shaping the next generation of sporting talents.
He said every successful young athlete is backed by a strong support system built on sacrifice, encouragement and steadfast dedication.
“Your commitment helps shape not only sporting excellence but also character and values.
“We hope to see many more champions emerge, following in the footsteps of legends such as Datuk Nicol David, Ong Beng Hee, Low Wee Wern, Ng Eain Yow and S. Sivasangari, to name but a few,” he said.
Gooi described the championship as more than just a sporting competition, saying it serves as an important platform for aspiring squash players to showcase their potential while gaining invaluable international exposure.
“It is a platform where young athletes can test their abilities, challenge themselves, gain international exposure and pursue excellence.
“Every match played this week presents an opportunity to learn, improve and grow,” he added.
Organised by the Penang Squash Rackets Association with PBAPP as the main sponsor, the 22nd PBA Penang International Junior Squash Championship is being held from June 30 to July 5 at the Nicol David International Squash Centre.
