Penang’s sovereignty issue should not be raised

PENANGITES in general and a local-based group in the state are supportive of the state government’s decision to end questions raised by Kedah over the sovereignty of Penang.

Penang Malay Association (Pemenang) president Tan Sri Yusoff Latiff said the “Kedah owns Penang” argument put forth by the Kedah government was uncalled for.

“This issue should not be prolonged as the state is part of the Malaysian federation.

“I hope the question of sovereignty can be put to rest,” he told Buletin Mutiara during a phone interview today.

Yusoff, who is also the Penang Malay Heritage Trust Organisation president, added that it was not the right way to question the sovereignty of the state.

Prof Datuk Dr Ahmad Murad Merican, who is from the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilisation (ISTAC-IIUM), said everyone has to be faithful to the past.

“I am not suggesting changing the past,” he said.

Alex Tan, who is a direct sales agent, said the brouhaha that had been created was rather unhelpful and hoped it would die down fast.

“We should focus on the current Covid-19 pandemic rather than harping on the unnecessary stuff.

“Penang is part of the federation in accordance with the history,” he said.

A. Kannan, who is a hotel employee, was also unperturbed with all the confusion raised.

“Right now, this controversy should be put to rest,” he said.
