THE Perak Road Market, which has been closed since June 11 after 11 Covid-19 cases were detected among its traders, is now reopened.

State Local Government, Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said the market had been closed a week ago for sanitisation works.

He said Covid-19 screenings involving 69 traders were carried out and 58 of them were tested negative.

“The market has been given clearance by the authorities to resume its operation.

“To be frank, it’s not easy to close the market, especially during the current total lockdown period as many people’s livelihoods are affected.

“However, I have always been saying that health aspect should always be prioritised no matter what,” he told reporters after inspecting the opening of Perak Road Market today.

In another development, Jagdeep urged Penangites to swiftly register themselves for vaccination under the Covid-19 National Immunisation Programme (NIP).

To date, he pointed out that about 900,000 people have registered while about 400,000 have yet to do so.

“I really hope those who have yet to do so will register themselves soon.

“We are ready to assist the health authorities in the ongoing vaccination programme,” he said, adding that many vaccination centres (PPVs) had been established in the state.

Also present were Jelutong MP RSN Rayer, Batu Lancang assemblyman Ong Ah Teong and Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang.
