IN conjunction with the Pongal celebration, the Penang Hindu Association (PHA) organised, for the first time, a Thalai Pongal ceremony for couples matched through its Suyamvaram Programme.

The ceremony was held yesterday at the Rokkumalai Sri Muniswarar Bathrakaliamman Temple in Air Itam, Penang.

According to PHA president Datuk P. Murugiah, Thalai Pongal is a significant cultural milestone for a newly married bride, marking her first Pongal celebration at her husband’s home. Traditionally, the bride’s family brings special gifts known as seer, and a feast is prepared to welcome the new son-in-law, symbolising familial unity and the strengthening of bonds between families.

A total of four couples attended the ceremony, namely Mr and Mrs Sughanth Sarathy, Mr and Mrs Jaggen, and Mr and Mrs Loganathan. Another couple, Mr and Mrs Anandaraj, also matchmade through the Suyamvaram Programme, attended the ceremony and proudly introduced their son, Kuhanraj, who was born in 2024.

“PHA regards these couples as part of our extended family. The Thalai Pongal ceremony was conducted in full accordance with tradition by the temple priest for the invited couples. At the end of the ceremony, the couples were presented with seer (traditional gifts),” said Murugiah.

The Suyamvaram Programme, a Hindu matchmaking initiative, is organised by the Penang Hindu Association in collaboration with the Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, Penang.

Murugiah said that to date, the programme has successfully matched 10 couples. One couple has been blessed with a child, while several others are expected to share good news soon.

He added that PHA welcomes Malaysian Hindus to apply for the Suyamvaram Programme, which is a non-profit community service aimed at helping individuals find suitable life partners. He also encouraged more professionals to register to meet growing demand.

The programme is open to adult Malaysian Hindus who are single, divorced (with or without children), widowers or widows (with or without children), as well as single parents and persons with physical challenges.

“Currently, we have 101 female applicants and 170 male applicants registered with us. Applicants can be assured that strict confidentiality will be maintained at all times,” he said.
